The e-portfolios used for UKFP
There are two e-portfolio platforms used by the UK Foundation Programme:
Horus: England
Used by all foundation schools in England (provided by NHSE, formerly Health Education England)
Turas: Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales
Used by all foundation schools in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales (provided by NHS Scotland)
The exact format of each system is different, but they each contain nationally-agreed core content:
- Personal and Professional Development Plan (PDP)
- Start and end of placement review/report forms
- Curriculum
- Assessments
- Supervised Learning Events (SLEs)
- Reflection
- Other evidence such as additional achievements and career planning
- ARCP forms
Roles and responsibilities
Foundation school/local education provider
Your foundation school and/or local education provider will:
- set up your user account and update it with any in-year changes (for example, change of supervisor, placement dates or specialty).
- provide you with information on how to access your portfolio such as website address, log-in details and how to get started.
- explain how you should use your e-portfolio and what the e-portfolio requirements for successful completion of F1/the Foundation Programme are.
- support you with any issues you may have when using your e-portfolio, including first-line technical support (for example, if you’re not sure how to log in or where to find a particular form).
E-portfolio technical teams
The Horus and Turas e-portfolio technical teams will:
- keep the system well maintained and secure
- resolve any bugs or errors
- meet regularly with UKFPO and foundation teams from each of the four UK nations* to agree on updates and improvements required to the systems.
* The four UK nation statutory education bodies (SEBs) are NHS England (NHSE), Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA), NHS Scotland, Health Education Improvement Wales (HEIW)
Clinical and educational supervisors
CSs and ESs are expected to:
- meet regularly with foundation doctors (FDs) to review progress, agree learning objectives and make sure they understand the learning opportunities and expectations for each placement.
- review the e-portfolio regularly and provide timely, constructive feedback to support curriculum coverage, development and progression.
- complete the required supervisor meeting forms and reports in the e-portfolio.
- support FDs to gather and map appropriate evidence to FPCs and HLOs.
- identify concerns or additional support needs early, involve the appropriate local education team where needed, and make sure relevant feedback, including PSG feedback, informs supervisor reports and ARCP preparation.
Foundation doctors
Foundation doctors are expected to:
- keep their e-portfolio up to date
- gather a range of evidence
- map evidence to FPCs and HLOs
- seek, record and reflect on feedback
- engage with supervisors and prepare for ARCP
