The Oriel application system is compatible with Safari v12+, Google Chrome v77+, Edge and Firefox v68+. Applicants should use one of these browsers when using the website and preferably the most up to date version of that browser.
Applicants are required to register for an account on Oriel before they can begin their Foundation Programme application. UK nominated applicants (final year students) should follow the steps explained below.
How to register on Oriel (UK medical school nominees only)
On 17 September 2024 all applicants nominated by a UK medical school will receive an email with a link to register and confirm their nomination on Oriel.
Registration emails will be sent at 09:00 (BST), however please note that this email may take some time to appear in your inbox. If you do not receive this email by late morning you should contact your medical school immediately (check your junk mail folder beforehand).
You should register on Oriel prior to the start of the application window. If you do not register on Oriel before the application window opens, you can still register within the application window but this will inevitably decrease the amount of time available to you to complete the application form during the 2 week application window. The sooner you register, the sooner you can begin your application.
IMPORTANT: Nominated UK applicants are only able to access the foundation application process by following the URL provided in the registration e-mail. (This is not applicable to applicants who applied through the eligibility application process).
You will be asked to create a password once you have followed the link to Oriel. You will then be able to log on to Oriel to access the registration pages.
The email address and password chosen at this time will need to be used when accessing the system for all future activities. You can update both once you’ve logged in if you need to. You should keep your password safe.
Once you have registered, you will be able to apply when the application window opens.
Applicants who have applied through the eligibility process do not need to register again in September because they have already completed registration, but will need to complete the main Foundation Programme application form during the national application window.
How to search for the Foundation Programme vacancy on Oriel
You must select the UK Foundation programme staff group by clicking on the UK Foundation Programme logo from the landing page. You will not be able to access the application form for the UK Foundation Programme by selecting any other staff group (including Medical and Public Health Specialties).
1) On the Oriel home page, select the UK Foundation Programme logo/staff group.
2) Select ‘Vacancies’ from the toolbar on the left or top of the screen.
3) Select ‘Foundation’ from the drop-down menu called ‘I am applying to:’(You may need to untick ‘Stand Alone Foundation’ as this will generate search results for the one-year programme for fully registered doctors).
4) Vacancies will appear in the results box – select the ‘Apply’ box to the right of the relevant vacancy.
How to amend your staff group on Oriel
If you accidently selected the wrong staff group when you registered on the system, you can amend the staff group to show as Foundation on your existing account:
1) In the right hand corner of the screen select ‘My Profile’.
2) You will be presented with the Profile Options menu, select ‘Security’ from the left-hand navigation menu.
3) In the right hand corner of the screen, select the ‘edit profile information’ button.
4) You will be prompted to re-enter your password.
5) In the ‘Amend your staff group selection’ field, select ‘Foundation’ from the list of staff groups, and then click on the ‘Save’ button which is on the right hand corner of the screen.
Accessing Oriel and troubleshooting
You should only log into Oriel via one browser at a time. This includes not having Oriel open (logged in) at the same time on multiple devices.
You should not use a mobile device to complete your application because functionality has not been built into the system to support this.
Further information about accessing Oriel is available in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
If there appears to be an error on the system, you are advised to try accessing the site from a different web browser, for example, Google Chrome, or deleting your cache or internet browser history. If this does not fix the issue, support is available to you via the technical helpdesk: oriel@hicom.co.uk.
If your Oriel account is locked
Please email the UKFPO Helpdesk at helpdesk@foundationprogramme.nhs.uk and provide your Oriel PIN to enable us to unlock your account.
