Mandatory Foundation Programme learning requirement
Each foundation doctor (FD) must undertake a minimum of 60 hours of learning during their F1 and during their F2 year (rotation) (pro-rata for less than full time (LTFT) FDs). FDs should be on track to log the required number of hours prior to Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP).
The 60 hours can consist of core learning alone or combined with non-core as follows:
Core learning (mandatory minimum 30 hours): Must be a minimum of 30 hours or can consist of the total 60 hours required.
Non-core learning (not mandatory maximum 30 hours): can count towards the total of 60 hours required, but only up to a maximum of 30 hours.
Guidelines
- FDs are responsible for logging and tracking their own hours in their e-portfolio to the nearest half hour.
- No requirement to upload evidence of attendance at teaching sessions to the e-portfolio.
- Non-core learning must cover a range of topics relating to the broad range of Foundation. Specialty-specific learning should be limited to no more than 5 of the 30 non-core hours.
- Ideally learning should be undertaken during the dedicated teaching time for FDs or within designated self-development time (SDT).
- Local education providers (LEPs)/foundation schools are responsible for managing and quality assuring this process.
- If concerns regarding FD engagement with the above, the Foundation Programme Training Director/Tutor (FPTD/T) should discuss with the Foundation School Director (FSD).
