Foundation school (UoA) Preferencing

You are required to rank all foundation schools in order of preference using a drag and drop process. A list of the geographical areas that each foundation school covers can be found on the Foundation Schools webpage.

You should refer to local foundation school websites for details of trusts, health boards and other employing organisations in each region.

You can amend the order in which you have preferenced foundation schools following the close of the application window. The deadline for this can be found in the application timeline.

Do not attempt to rank preferences using a smartphone device, as Oriel has not been designed to work on these devices.

Non-urgent advice: Saving your preferences

The Oriel preferencing page is set to time out after 59 minutes of inactivity. Do not have Oriel open on two browsers/tabs at the same time, as your preferences will not be saved .

There is no ‘submit’ button for preferences in Oriel. You MUST save your preferences. The system will not autosave your preferences. Make sure you remember to save your preferences if you leave your computer part-way through preferencing.

Applicants must preference ALL foundation schools (UoAs) on Oriel when completing their application form on Oriel. After submitting your application, you can change the order you have chosen to preference the foundation schools as many times as you like, up until the foundation school preferencing deadline which can be found in the application timeline.

1) Select the “Preferences” tab from within your dashboard in Oriel. You will see your main FP application.

2) Select “Update UoA preferences”. You will then be able to edit your preferences using the drag and drop process.

3) You must select the save button every time you wish to save your preferences and changes. The system will not autosave your preferences. The “save” button can be found in the top right hand corner of the screen.

Preferencing required after application submission

If you have opted to also apply for FPPs within your main FP application, the programme preferencing for FPP begins as soon as you have submitted your main FP application on Oriel.

You must therefore preference individual programmes for FPP after you have submitted your FP application on Oriel and ideally as soon as possible so that you don’t forget to action this.

FPP programme preferences can be amended on Oriel up until the date specified in the application timeline.

You are not required to preference all the available programmes for FPP. You should preference only the programmes you are prepared to accept an offer for.

Group and programme preferencing takes places after applicants are allocated to a foundation school. Refer to the application timeline for the dates of the preferencing windows, and the dates on which applicants are matched to a group and then to programme.

You are only able to preference FP programmes in your allocated foundation school and/or matched group, once the preferencing window has opened.

You are advised to allow sufficient time to preference groups and programmes by the deadline. Late preferences cannot be submitted under any circumstances.

You will be able to export/download the list of available programmes in your allocated foundation school from Oriel once the programme preferencing window opens. This export will be in an Excel compatible file.

Further information about the process of group and programme preferencing can be found on the preferences webpage.

1) Select the “Preferences” tab from within your dashboard in Oriel. You will see your main FP application, and your FPP application if you also applied for FPP.

2) Select “Update preferences”. You will then be able to preference the programmes in your order of choice using the drag and drop process.

3) You must select the save button every time you wish to save your preferences and changes. The system will not autosave your preferences. The “save” button can be found in the top right hand corner of the screen.
