Foundation Schools

Foundation schools are not bricks and mortar institutions. They are a conceptual group of institutions that bring together medical schools, the local deanery, trusts (acute, mental health and PCTs) and other organisations such as hospices. They aim to offer training to foundation doctors in a range of different settings and clinical environments. The schools are administered by a central local staff which is supported by the deanery.

The schools deliver training according to national guidance developed by the UKFPO. There are local variations in some areas.

See below documents showing the geographic distribution of Foundation Schools and Medical Schools for the current and the upcoming foundation training years. Note that there will be some changes to the configuration of foundation schools for the training year starting in August 2023.
