Another training year is almost over and the extended shadowing starts next week. It is just possible that this is the first bulletin that will be read by many of our incoming F1s. If that applies to you – Welcome.

For many established F1s and F2s, it’s time to move on and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you well in the next step of you career, be it as a fully registered doctor or as someone moving into specialty or general practice training or perhaps even taking a well-earned few months off. Whatever you are planning, I applaud you for your efforts over the past eighteen months.

For those that were FiY1s, you might be interested to know that the GMC has published some research suggesting its value as a ‘responsibility apprenticeship’ and recommending a closer look at how final year students can be best prepared for the transition to practice (2020-medical-graduates—the-work-and-wellbeing-of-interim-foundation-year-1-doctors-during-covid-19). The UKFPO will continue to develop links with Medical Schools Council to facilitate this.

Finally, at this point we will be saying farewell and thank you to Charlotte Perry and Wassim Merzougui, our outgoing UKFPO Leadership Fellows, and welcome to Naimh Woods and Navindi Fernandopulle, who have recently been appointed to the role from August. I’m sure you will be hearing more about their work over the coming year.

Curriculum

As part of the introduction of the 2021 UKFP Curriculum, the UKFPO are pleased to invite trainers, graduates and foundation doctors to attend webinars to help explore what the curriculum means for them. Dates of the planned webinars are below, however please click here to keep up to date with how to register and attend the webinars. All webinars will be recorded and uploaded onto our website.

FP2022 Eligibility Application process – opening Wednesday 14 July 2021

The Eligibility Application process for FP2022 opened this morning, Wednesday 14th July at 09:00 (BST), and will close on Wednesday 04th August 2021 12:00 (midday BST). Guidance for the Eligibility application process is on the UKFPO website.

Mind the Bleep

Mind the Bleep supports foundation doctors with free content on clinical, employment & career topics. Get in touch if you’re keen to boost your portfolio e.g. lead a national QIP. If you’re a new FY1, they’re providing weekly webinars to help you! Mind the Bleep is created by Dr Akash Doshi, a medical registrar who loves teaching & supporting foundation doctors. He’s always happy to be contacted to offer help & support to anyone

Doctors in Training Induction Programme

The Doctors in Training (DiT) Induction e-learning programme has been reviewed and updated ahead of the new training year. Following feedback and reviews on the current content, the programme has been updated and reviewed by subject specialists to improve the experience for learners. The updated programme is now available on the e-LfH Hub from 1 July 2021. 

DiT is aimed at Foundation Doctors (F1 and F2) and provides knowledge in 8 key clinical areas. It addresses some identified gaps in knowledge for doctors prior to starting their next year on 1 August. The programme focuses on professional skills in the workplace through 3 patient journey scenarios and each one comes with an assessment to confirm compliance.

The National Education and Training Survey (NETS) – HEE only

The National Education and Training Survey (NETS) is now open until 23 July 2021. This is the only national (England-wide) survey open to all students and trainees working and training in healthcare and is one of the ways that Health Education England are working to improve the quality of education and training. The NETS is available here. 

The NETS is an opportunity for students and trainees to tell HEE about their experience and share what is working well and what could be improved.  The survey takes between 6-10 minutes to complete and the results will be available to view in the NETS Reporting Tool.

National Foundation Trainee Surgical Societies Conference

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is proud to present its first annual conference run by and for foundation trainees. Whether you’re only just starting to consider a career in surgery, or you’re already set on becoming a surgeon and looking to strengthen your CV, this two-day online event is the perfect platform to support your surgical ambitions.

National Sarcoma Awareness Project

Final year medical students and foundation doctors are invited to complete a free e-learning module on sarcomas as part of the National Sarcoma Awareness Project. On completion, you will receive a certificate for your e-portfolio and the top scoring participants will be given the opportunity to take part in a funded short-term clinical fellowship at a regional sarcoma centre to further their knowledge on sarcoma and boost their CV.

E-Learning for Healthcare (E-LfH) updates

E-Learning for Healthcare has a wealth of educational resources aimed at both Foundation supervisors and foundation doctors.

You can sign on to the e-learning with your login supplied by e-LfH at any time during your foundation training: https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/foundation-programme/

The Horus and Turas e-portfolios have deep links to healthcare-LfH sessions from the Foundation Curriculum and therefore accessible to all trainees, making it quicker and easy to access the appropriate session linked to the curriculum.

With the roll-out of the new curriculum, the links below focus on modules relating to the learning and assessment tools that are used.

Updates to End of Life Care for All (e-ELCA) e-learning

A new learning path for Foundation Doctors has been added to the End of Life Care for All (e-ELCA) e-learning programme. The resource has been designed to be completed by doctors during placements to support their own learning and can also be signposted to by supervisors.

Virtual Instructor Led Learning Faculty – PGMDE focus (England only – for now)

Health Education England’s Technology Enhanced Learning (HEE TEL) team is working on the Virtual Instructor Led Learning (VILL) Faculty, which aims to support the education community increase their confidence and capability as they are transitioning to designing, developing and delivering learning virtually. 

The VILL faculty aims to offer support to everyone regardless of their current ability and experience. The faculty will be designed to enable the postgraduate medical and dental education (PGMDE) community to be self-serving and self-determined to enable tailored learning to meet their needs and drive excellence when designing and delivering virtually. 

Following a successful series of VILL faculty events to support educators from across the NHS in June 2021, the team is now offering a series of events specifically for the PGMDE community throughout July 2021.

The following support to PGMDE as part of the VILL faculty is available:

NEW Community of Practice (45-minute masterclasses on a key theme)  

o        Group masterclasses  

o        Format: Webinar 

o        Share best practice principles to drive excellence in virtual learning in three critical areas: 

  • Increase interactivity and engagement with learners.  
    • Design principles for virtual learning  
    • Use of technology to stimulate learning. 

Driving Excellence in Virtual Learning Workshop (90 minute live virtual session) 

o        Raise awareness of the context/implications for virtual teaching​ 

o        Support educators to drive excellence in virtual teaching by embedding an evidence-based approach guided by VILL best practice​. 

o        Support educators to drive their capability and confidence.   

o        Guide educators to support/train other educators to accelerate the transition to virtual/hybrid learning and maintain the quality of learning required.   

There are also a limited number of places available for a 20-minute one-to-one coaching session. These sessions are intended to cover topics not addressed in the Driving Excellence Workshop or the Group Webinar Masterclasses. (Please note these sessions are not for technical or IT advice and support on the use of your specific virtual learning platform)

If you require technical support on Microsoft Teams, there are 34 self-directed resources available on the e-LfH Hub.
