To satisfy the curriculum, you have to provide evidence demonstrating complete coverage of the curriculum and thus achievement of the HLOs. To achieve this, you have to map a range of evidence selected from your e-portfolio to each FPC.
The gathering of portfolio evidence is a formative process but, as with much of the formative assessment used throughout the year, selected examples are used summatively.
For each FPC, you should aim to provide a range of mapped evidence, which should be from a range of learning experiences including SLEs, classroom or self-directed learning, reflective practice and formative feedback.
However, at least some of this must comprise evidence from the top of Miller’s Pyramid (see also page 70 of the FP Curriculum), that is, ‘does’, in the form of
- SLEs, where you have demonstrated the required capabilities
- multisource feedback, via the TAB or PSG.
Some will, however, come from other levels, for example where you have ‘shown’ competence (for example, simulation).
Demonstration of behaviours can be underpinned by evidence that you ‘know’, through attendance at learning or teaching events and self-directed learning. Such Miller’s Pyramid lower-level evidence can be strengthened by reflection. In selecting which evidence to link, you should remember that you have to:
- show capabilities across different healthcare settings, that is, acute, non-acute and community;
- include examples pertaining to both physical and mental health, and an understanding of the effect of social needs on health;
- provide a range of examples, some of which must be from directly observed encounters with patients to confirm clinical capabilities and communication skills
Suggested learning tools and assessments mapped to the Higher Level Outcomes (HLOs)
There is no one right way to build a portfolio – you will all have different experiences and reflect in different ways. The main aim is to demonstrate your achievement of the required HLOs and the FPCs within them, using the evidence you have gathered throughout your FY1 or FY2. The suggestions below are to support you to get started. Almost any of the learning tools could be relevant to any of the HLOs, depending on what you have reflected or focussed on in the tool.
