UKFPO Fellow project – can you see me? Exploring Foundation Doctor perspectives on treating marginalised communities

Contact Dr Aisia Lea (2026-27 UKFPO Fellow) for queries: aisia.lea4@nhs.net

Project background

Marginalised communities or ‘inclusion groups’, including, but not limited to, homeless, ethnically minoritised, LGBTQ+, and disabled patients are more likely to have poorer health outcomes and experiences with healthcare professionals due to discrimination and implicit bias. Despite these groups making up a significant proportion of our patient population, targeted teaching at medical school is often lacking and should be addressed in the Foundation Programme (FP) given it’s importance in patient care and alignment with the FP curriculum.

Aims and objectives

  • Explore Foundation Doctor (FD) and patient perspectives surrounding the interactions with and management of marginalised communities.
  • Collating relevant resources that FDs can engage with to support their practice and meet curriculum aims.
  • Design a bespoke resource/interactive session for FDs to improve knowledge and confidence of managing patients who are a part of marginalised communities.

Intended audience and impact

The intended audience for the created resource will be FDs nationally and will hope to have a positive impact on patients from marginalised groups.

Methodology

  1. Mixed qualitative-quantitative survey exploring FD perspectives of managing marginalised patients.
  2. UKFP curriculum review and elfh review.
  3. Stakeholder engagement with resident doctor and patient working groups.

Get involved

If you’re interested in getting involved please fill in the FD Evaluation of Experience and Confidence in Managing Marginalised Patients online survey to share your experiences and perspectives of managing patients from marginalised groups.
