A series of lectures organised by foundation doctors working with the Foundation Team to select topics chosen by the foundation doctors.
A new Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity themed teaching series was devised and piloted by Dr Maebh Lynch (then FY2 Doctor at Royal Bolton Hospital).
It consisted of five face-to-face interactive lecture-type teaching sessions delivered on a wide range of topics including protected characteristics, FTSU, disability, anti-racism, trans healthcare, hospital chaplaincy/religious & faith practices.
It was delivered to FY1 and FY2 Doctors at RBH; incorporated into the weekly time allocated for foundation doctor teaching. Sessions were delivered by professionals with expertise/lived experience in that subject matter.
Topics discussed
- Protected Characteristics/Unconscious Bias/Freedom to Speak Up
- Disability
- Gender Identity Medicine
- Anti-Racism Teaching
- Religion/Chaplaincy
Overall, received very well by foundation doctors and very positive feedback given. Pre and post teaching series questionnaires also showed that confidence improved followed this teaching series (see Figure 1).

Wider impact
This pilot being used as an example towards the implementation of EDI teaching into the Foundation Curriculum across the North West of England.
